Dr. Sunny Awe attended Universities of Ibadan, Nigeria (1978-1981) and obtained a B.S. (Honors) in Pharmacology. He started his academic career at the Drug Research and Production Unit, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, as a Junior Research Fellow in the University after he completed his M.S. degree in Autonomic Pharmacology in 1985. Dr. Awe was promoted to Research Fellow in 1988 and his research was mostly on efficacy and toxicity profile assessment of natural products implicated in the treatment of tropical diseases. He enrolled for the PhD program of the University of Ibadan and later the MBA course at the Obafemi Awolowo University and obtained the MBA and PhD (Pharmacology) degrees in 1990 and 1991 respectively. Dr. Awe taught Pharmacology to medical students at the Ogun State University, Ago- Iwoye, Nigeria during his one-year sabbatical leave in 1991. He was awarded the Commonwealth Science Council Fellowship award for his postdoctoral training at London School of Pharmacy where he worked with Professor David Phillipson on isolation of antimalarial active principles of Alstonia boonei. He joined the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan as a Lecturer I in 1992 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1995. Dr. Awe taught various pharmacology and biomedical sciences courses to medical, dental and pharmacy undergraduate students and graduate students. He served as Director of Graduate Programs and Member Post Graduate Board of Studies-(1992 to 1998) and supervised numerous B.Pharm. and M.S. theses and

co-supervised four Ph.D. dissertations. Dr. Awe had his postdoctoral research training in Ophthalmic Pharmacology at the Creighton University Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1998. Dr. Awe later joined the Physiology and Biophysics/Cardiology Departments, School of Medicine, University of Louisvilleas a Senior Research Associate. Dr. Awe’s research was on natural products,ophthalmic and receptor pharmacology, neurosciences and cardiovascular pharmacology with emphasis on role of aldose reductase in aldehyde-induced ischemia and pharmacology of environmental pollutant-mediated cardiovascular responses. Dr. Awe has published over 55 research articles in top-rated journals including Journal of Biological Chemistry, American Journal of Physiology among others. Dr. Awe received numerous scientific awards including the Cardiovascular Research Outreach Award of the American Heart Association and Third World Academy of Science Award. Dr. Awe is currently a member of several reputable scientific organizations including American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) and Society of Toxicology. He reviews manuscripts for reputed scientific journals. Dr. Awe is married with children. Dr. Sunny Awe is currently a Senior Pharmacologist in the Division of Medical Imaging Products, Office of New Drugs, United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
