Basil O. Ibe, Ph.D, is a Professor of Pediatrics at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Director of the Summer Fellowship Program at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LABiomed), at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance, California. Dr. Ibe earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas in 1984. After 4 years of Postdoctoral work at UT Southwestern, Dallas and University of Colorado, Boulder, he joined the faculty of the Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1988. His postgraduate works involved chemical synthesis of potential anticonvulsant and anti-cholinergic agents based on their structure-activity relationships and molecular-electronic properties. In the past twenty years, his works have focused in understanding the factors that facilitate the perinatal pulmonary adaptation, focusing primary on the roles of platelet activating factor (PAF) and eicosanoids in the pathology of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). Dr Ibe also studies the pathobiology of the acute chest syndrome in sickle cell disease, role of NF-kB, and nuclear mitogenic proteins in regulation of PAF receptor gene and protein expression in PPHN. His works are published in reputable journals. Dr. Ibe enjoys teaching. He is Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Technology at Los Angeles Harbor College, Wilmington, CA. Dr. Ibe is a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Association of African Biomedical Scientists for which he is the Vice President, and the American Federation of Teachers. He is a reviewer for American Journal of Physiology Cell and Molecular Physiology, International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, British Journal of Pharmacology and Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine. Dr. Ibe guides fellows in basic science research and serves as mentor to students aspiring to graduate and professional schools in the sciences and health care fields.
